Remember this Clinton quote from 1998 (quoted in Stephen Hayes 'Weekly Standard' column)

Please ask yourself...what have the French done for you lately? Oh, besides that bit of assistance they gave us back in 1776. And correct me if I'm wrong, but do the French speak German right now...and do the Germans bow to Hitler right now....??? So how can the French and Germans say we are the worlds bully if we were the ones that saved their butts? Maybe we should just let them take care of themselves....
